My Spiritual Journey through Locs part 1

My Spiritual Journey through Locs part 1

Hey Tribe,

December of last year I made the decision to loc up my hair. I just felt I needed a change and I've always appreciated the beauty of locs but of course, I let fear take over. What if I get bored? What if I look ugly? It’s the same fear that prevented me from going natural but I took the plunge and unlocked something so beautiful within myself.

I started my journey with two-strand twists on January 8th, 2020. It was the easiest style for me. Yes, I did them myself, after doing some much-needed research on Youtube. Everyone told me that I should see a pro to start my locs. But something about this journey felt personal, spiritual even. I will be the first to tell you that I’m not good with hair. But I did them. They are not perfect but they are me.

It has been a little over two months and yes I look like an 11-year-old boy hahahahah but I love them. I have about 48 of them. Which is a lot less than the norm. Some people have over 100! However, 4 and 8 equals 12. Angel number 12:

What I put out into the universe is of a positive nature. I am asked to stay on a positive path and to use my natural skills, talents, and abilities to the utmost benefit to myself and others. I take my journey very seriously. Dreadlock is not just another hairstyle. For many it’s a religious experience and a natural extension of themselves. People have been prosecuted for years and called dirty for expressing themselves and wearing their hair in its natural state.

Daily routine:

I spray my locs every morning with a mixture of water and oil. I use avocado oil serum from Geti Cosmetics. It’s lightweight and perfect for every day, smells amazing and keeps the frizz at bay. When my scalp feels extra dry I use a mixture of Jamaican black castor oil and black seed oil. That’s pretty much it. Easy peasy just the way I like maintenance.

I wash my hair regularly every two weeks cause my hair and scalp tend to build up. I wash my hair using Dr. Bronners Castille soap. This soap does pretty much everything and leaves my hair and scalp squeaky clean.

Issues:

the only issue I have faced is my dry scalp. I’ve always had dry, flaky scalp. My diet is pretty clean so I don’t think it’s a gut issue. The only thing that helps is washing my hair often and keeping the scalp super moisturized with heavy oils. So if you have any recommendations drop them in the comments.

Retwist:

I’m diving into my first ever retwist this weekend:

(These pictures are pre-retwist) I wash my hair with Dr. bronner’s castile soap and while my hair is wet I use a mixture of aloe vera gel and black castor oil to retwist and clip them down. Let them dry and take out the clips!

This journey has already thought me about patience but I also can’t wait to see what my hair looks like a year from now!

Wish me luck!
